The Growth Scripture – By Deepa Nagarajan

Summary Of The Book: The first book to bust the myths around OKRs and OGSM, and show you how to use these models for growth and scaling of any type of organization

There are many books and multiple write-ups about how to grow and scale a business; how to manage your strategic imperatives and the goals around them.

There are also many organizations that adopt management models like OKRs and OGSM to support their growth story and augment their efforts to scale.

However, here are some alarming statistics on such programs:

Let’s analyze:

– Only 8% of leaders are good at both strategy and execution.

– Only 15% of the organizations who begin a business transformation exercise through a goal-management framework succeed beyond 16 months.

– 95% of the organizations who embark on OKRs and OGSM implementation lose momentum after 24 months.

– In many organizations, up to 95% of the employees don’t even understand the strategy of the company they work for.

Research shows that 84% of employees are generally disengaged in their jobs.

Why do you think these models that should enable and empower organizations to grow and scale fall flat and yet we see a startup spurt?  Did you know that 90% of startups fail or give up on their venture after 18-24 months?

What is the reason for these abysmal statistics?  How do you build sustainable and stable businesses using the right application of management models?

Read the secrets and mind-blowing principles, insights, and inspirations including several case studies of how to script your growth story using the right management model in the right way, at the right time.

  1. Can you tell us a little about your book?
This is the first book to be ever written – especially by an Indian author – on the topic of growth models like OKRs and OGSM, busting the myths and mysteries around these management models. It is also significant in terms of being the first book to give the control and tools to manage the growth story in the hands of the leaders. If these principles are applied well, it can definitely be a great success case in point for the readers.
  2. Is there a specific event that inspired this story or was this an out of the blue idea?
For me, it was appalling that the success rate of OKR implementation for organizational growth was really poor. It was as low as 15-20%. That prompted me to research deeply to understand the WHY behind these failures.  So I decided to decode, and present the mysteries and clear the misconceptions around OKR practice in an organization.

    3. What was your impression of your first draft when you read it?
What started as a simple writing on OKR principles expanded wider and deeper into a deep, well-researched and validated treatise on growth and scale for any organization.  It was amazing to expand the topic and reread the book.

4. What makes your book the one to read?
If any leader or startup founder wants to get the principles and practices of growth and scale right and use growth models like OKRs or OGSM in a well-informed way and also sustain the momentum of this program in the organization, then this book is a must read,  It saves a lot of heartache at a later stage.  You never know if OKR is the right model for you in your current state.  So why embark on the journey without understanding the terrain and milestones?

5. Who’s your all-time favourite author? Which book of his/hers made you fall in love with them?
My all time favorite management treatise with all principles well embededed in it already is the Bhagavad Gita.  Nothing more to be said.

6. What is your evergreen tip to the writers out there?
Research your topic well and make sure your writing is sound.  It should unequivocally and irrefutably establish your subject matter expertise.

7.Do you have another plot brewing?
Yes – on true meaning, principles and leadership practices of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and what it takes to be a truly DEI driven company.  Else the initiaitve can quickly turn from DEI to ‘die”.
