How Did Maharashtra And Gujarat Become Separate States?

The States Of Gujarat And Maharashtra Were Both Part Of The Bombay Province Before Independence And For Some Time After Independence. At That Time The Number Of Speakers Of Marathi And Gujarati Was The Highest. Due To Language-Wise Regionalisation, Both Demanded A Separate State.

When The Movement Broke Out

Seeing The Momentum Of Protests In Various Corners Of The State, The Government Of India Decided To Frame The Bombay Reorganization Act. After It Was Passed In Parliament, Bombay State Was Divided Into Maharashtra And Gujarat. Gujarat And Maharashtra Were Declared As Two Separate States On May 1, 1960.
