The HSRA PUBLISHERS officially released the book “Mrittika Bhawan – Mud housing architecture of Bengal” on Monday in Siliguri at the office of the Siliguri Engineers and Architects Association. It was written by renowned artist and architect Dr. Sourav Mitra. A talk by the author, who discussed his experiences and lessons learned while traveling from village to hamlet in West Bengal to write the research paper, was part of the book launching ceremony.
Author Sourav Mitra describes visiting many communities in Bengal, particularly in the Barendbhumi district, gathering knowledge, and then skillfully recording it. Through this book, a number of previously unrecognized facts about Bengali mud huts have been revealed.
“Due to modernism and the influence of the metropolis, these houses are on the edge of extinction. Mud homes are being replaced by opulent modern pakabari made of bricks and stones in a number of distant regions. With the modernism of the modern day, people’s views and mentalities are evolving. Many people are currently tearing down mud homes and erecting pucca homes. People have, nevertheless, continued their favorite traditions. “Writer added
“New talents are continuously encouraged by our association. One of our members will launch his book here today. We’ll all wish him luck at the beginning of the meeting, “said Siliguri Engineers and Architects association treasurer senior engineer Ashutosh Das.
The President and Secretary of SEAA unveiled the book’s cover. Engineer Binayak Basu, the president, discussed this book. He asserted that “Such a study that emphasizes our regional heritage is necessary for us and the younger generation. I appreciate the study and initiative of architect Sourav Mitra. We are humbled to learn that Sourav is succeeding in his studies despite devoting a lot of time to our line of work.”
Then-Secretary Engineer Dulal Niyogi remarked, “Sourav has already demonstrated his potential in the research report on the Siliguri municipal disaster mitigation plan. I’m hoping Sourav’s book is a huge success.
For publishing a journal titled “Architectural Analysis of Mud housing and Adobe Housing: Case of Bengal” under the journal name “International Journal of Research Publication and Reviews” in February 2022, Dr. Sourav Mitra was honored with the prestigious Young Researcher Award 2022 by the InSc (Institute of Scholars). The best submissions from throughout the nation were pooled, and the research article was selected from that group. The study focuses on Bengali traditional mud construction techniques. This book is a follow-up to that study report, and it will be useful to architects as well as anybody else interested in traditional architecture.
